Guía de un día

Is your cruise stopping in Cozumel and you want to see Playa del Carmen? You can do it in one day, but plan carefully: the ship won't wait for you. Here's how to do it stress-free.

Is it worth going to Playa del Carmen from your cruise?

Yes, if your port stop is at least 7–8 hours. The ferry takes 35 to 45 minutes each way, so on a short stop you'll spend more time in lines and on the water than in Playa. If your stop is short, enjoy Cozumel instead.

Step 1: From the cruise pier to the ferry pier

  • Punta Langosta: it's in downtown San Miguel; the ferry pier is a short walk away.
  • International Pier and Puerta Maya: they're on the south side of the island; take a taxi downtown (about 10–15 minutes). Agree on the fare before you get in.

Step 2: Buy your ticket and check the return schedule

Before crossing, check what time the last ferry that leaves you enough margin departs to get back to your ship. See today's ferry schedule and fares for Winjet, Ultramar and Xcaret Xailing.

Golden rule: plan to be back in Cozumel at least 1–2 hours before all aboard. Factor in the taxi ride back to the cruise pier and the boarding lines.

Step 3: What to do in Playa del Carmen in a few hours

  • 5th Avenue: starts right across from the pier; shops, cafés and restaurants.
  • Mamitas Beach or the downtown beach: for a quick swim without going far.
  • Parque Fundadores: next to the pier, home of the famous Mayan Portal.

Avoid long tours outside Playa (cenotes, Tulum, Xcaret) unless they're official excursions from your cruise line: if you're late, the ship won't wait.

Risks you should know

  • Bad weather: during northerly winds or storms, the Port Authority can close the port and cancel ferries. If that happens, you could get stuck on the other side.
  • Lines: on days with several cruise ships, ticket offices and boarding get crowded.
  • Payment: ticket offices charge in pesos; paying in dollars usually gets you a worse exchange rate.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the ferry ride? Between 35 and 45 minutes, depending on the ferry line.

Do I need a passport? Bring it, or whatever ID your cruise line requires; it's a domestic trip within Mexico, but you'll need it to reboard your ship.

Should I buy a round-trip ticket? It can be cheaper, but your return is tied to the same ferry line; make sure its return times work for you.
